The signer contacts their Escrow Closer to request a remote online notarization.
The signer’s document(s) are sent to the Remote Online Notary (RON) provider in PDF format to be prepared for signing.
The signer’s identity is screened according to the requirements of the notary’s commissioning state. This may include answering questions based on the signer’s personal and credit history (knowledge based authentication, or KBA), verifying the signer’s identification documents online (credential analysis), the notary remotely viewing the signer’s ID during the notarization or other RON identification methods set by statute.
During the remote online notarization, the notary and the signer communicate online using audio-visual technology – for example, via webcam and microphone or telephone, capturing both full audio and visual recording of the transaction. The notary and signer do not meet physically face-to-face but through technology.
Once the signer’s identity has been verified, and all other requirements for the notarization have been completed, the signers and the notary must sign the documents and the notary’s seal is affixed. For electronic documents, this requires electronic signatures and an electronic version of the notary’s seal provided within the RON platform.
The notary journal within the RON platform records any required information.
The remotely notarized document is returned to the individual who initiated the RON session.
